Days Out Near Stamford
Easton Walled Gardens
With Stamford offering historic charm, picturesque views and a wide range of shops, it’s no wonder that it’s regularly visited by thousands of people every year. Here at Easton Walled Gardens (just a 20 minute drive away!), you can escape the hustle and bustle and immerse yourself in 400 years of horticultural beauty. Known as the “lost gardens of Lincolnshire,” Easton Walled Gardens is a tranquil haven where you can stroll among vibrant flower meadows, ancient stone walls, and peaceful water features. Whether you’re simply wanting a peaceful day out, or inspiration for your own garden, our grounds offer the perfect retreat just a short drive from Stamford’s busy streets.
A Little Bit About the Grounds
Originally designed with stone enclosures around a medieval manor house, the gardens evolved through the Tudor, Jacobean, and Victorian eras, each leaving its mark with distinct features such as melon pits, ornate bedding, and diverse plantings. Following the demolition of Easton Hall in 1951, the gardens were reclaimed by nature, becoming overgrown and hidden from view. In the early 2000s, under the stewardship of the Cholmeley family, a dedicated restoration project began, transforming the neglected landscape into the vibrant and diverse gardens visitors enjoy today.
Today, Easton Walled Gardens offer a harmonious blend of historical elements and contemporary horticultural practices. Visitors can explore a variety of themed areas, including the Yew Tunnel, Cut Flower Garden, Cottage Garden, and Turf Maze. Seasonal highlights feature snowdrops, sweet peas, roses, and meadows teeming with wildlife. The River Witham meanders through the grounds, adding to the serene atmosphere. Our ongoing restoration focuses on innovative planting schemes that complement the timeless English landscape, creating a space where both nature and visitors can thrive together.
